Alternative Land Uses for Smallholder Farmers on Peatlands

Intercropping in smallholder oil palm fields for a sustainable future

Every year, thousands of farmers need to replant their aging oil palms. As young oil palms do not produce fruits yet, farmers need alternative sources of income. Intercropping with crops such as watermelon and corn can help farmers to sustain a livelihood, but this requires capital, knowledge, and access to markets. PT. Arconesia provides support to intercropping oil palm farmers. In this shirt film, CEO Yanda explains the social and environmental benefits of intercropping in oil palm fields, which are monitored by the SustainPalm living lab.
